Note | | Mary Wade - A Biography (Taken from family records and printed in "The Houses of Strother", 1993
Though of gentle birth, refined tastes, and luxurious life as it was known then, she endured with fortitude the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life in Colonial Virginia.
In 1744, Mary Wade married the dashing young Captain John Dabney Strother, son of Francis Strother and Susannah Dabney. His home was in Rappahannock County, Virginia, and he took Mary as his bride, building her a fine new house which he called "Wadefield" in her honor.
When she started on her wedding journey of 125 miles on horseback, she took with her to her new home one tiny sweet pear tree and one small apple tree. These grew to be stalwart trees, not only furnishing food for the family, but serving as a tie between the old home and family and the lonely little cabin in a strange settlement where the nearest neighbor was several miles away, and the path between was made dangerous by Indians and wild animals. The small cabin was to grow into a beautiful southern mansion.
John and Mary Wade Strother had 9 children. The parents brought over from England, Mr. Pruden, a tutor who taught them not only formal "book learning" but also nature study, music and art. An old letter say "Mary Wade Strother was a comely woman distinguished by her kindliness, dignity and courage, whose husband held her in high and tender esteem and exacted from all his household that they treat her with the deference due a woman of such noble character.
The Colony of Virginia was one of the strongest in promoting the Patriot Cause. When oppresion under England became unbearable, the Strother family devoted themselves to this cause. Mary saw three of her sons-in-law and her husband enlist in Virginia Regiments. Twice she helped her daughters pack food and medical supplies and sent them off on horseback to camps where their husbands law wounded.
After the Revolution, having established their married children on nearby plantations, John and Mary settled down to a quiet life, cared for by their slaves and two unmarried daughters. Mary, herself, took special pride in the orchard at "Wadefield", supervising the planting and pruning of the young trees. The beautiful pear tree which she had brought to "Wadefield" when she married John was her pride and joy, and her family called it "Mary's Tree". The record states that fruit was picked from the tree as late as 1909.
Mary's husband John died in 1795. Mary spent the remaining years of her life visiting her children and grandchildren. She died at the home of her favorite daughter, Susannah Hughlett, In Anson County, North Carolina, in the fall of 1802.1 |
