Obituary from unidentified, undated newspaper clipping (probably the Banner - Courier, Oregon City): Last Rites for William (sic) M Wade Estacada Pioneer Held Saturday. Wilbur Morris Wade was born Feb 27, 1873 and passed away Jan 30, 1957 at the family home which is only a short distance from the place of his birth on the Wm. N. Wade donation land claim. Most of his early schooling was in the Salem area, and he later attended the Oregon Normal School at Monmouth and also Portland University. On Jan. 28, 1897 he was united in marriage at Oregon City to Sadie E. Palmateer by T. L Jones, the Circuit rider. To this union were born three children: Esho (sic), who passed away in 1946, and Ralph and Merle, both of Estacada. Since his marriage - with the exception of nine years when the family resided in Eastern Oregon - he has lived in the Estacada area where he was interested in many community activities. At an early age he joined the Methodist church and was an active member as long as health permitted. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow and Rebekah lodges. Surviving besides his wife and two sons, are a sister, Amy Ely of Tigard and six grandchildren: Alice Moeller of Seaside; Frances Snyder of Warrenton; Ann Fish of Portland; Wade Halferty of US Submarine Service; Florence Henrickson of Eugene and Wayne Wade of Estacada. There are also 16 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 PM at the Clayville Chapel. Interement was in the W H H Wade Memorial cemetery, Estacada. Rev. Arthur L. Hansen of Portland officiated.1 |

This suggests that she died sometime after her last child, Amelia was born in 1854 and before the 1860 census. O. H. remarred January 9, 1859 to Mary Hanley and again, February 18, 1864 to Rebecca Kee, therefore Phebe must had died before January 9, 1859. There was no spouse named on the 1860 census and all the ages of the children are off by about 3-4 years. It is most likely that the 1850 ages are more accurate since he then had a wife who probably knew her cheldren's ages better then he did! According to marriage records, O. H. had married Mary Hanley on January 9, 1859. I don't know why she isn't named on the 1860 census. Perhaps she died or they divorced. Have found no records on either yet. On February 18, 1864, O. H. again remarried to Rebecca Kee.
Notes from Cheryl Endicott's research.Overton H. Wade was born in Virginia and was a brick mason by trade (as stated on the 1850 and 1860 Johnson County, MO censuses). Overton's wife, Phebe, was not named on the 1860 census. This suggests that she died sometime after her last child, Amelia was born in 1854 and before the 1860 census. O. H. remarred January 9, 1859 to Mary Hanley and again, February 18, 1864 to Rebecca Kee, therefore Phebe must had died before January 9, 1859. There was no spouse named on the 1860 census and all the ages of the children are off by about 3-4 years. It is most likely that the 1850 ages are more accurate since he ten had a wife who probably knew her cheldren's ages better then he did! According to marriage records, O. One source gave a date of May 1, 1813 but this date was just 6x months before the birthdate of his sister Lucinda. The 1850 census gives his age as 35 which, if correct, would mean a birthdate between August 1814 and August 1815. However, the 1860 census gives an age of 49. I am speculating the correct date should be May 1, 1815 which would be consistent with the birthdates of his siblings.1,2 |
