William F Wade1
Male, #24268, b. September 4, 1879, d. November 13, 1904
Note | | Information provided by Annie Nora (Grant) Haley in June 1991:
Received word by telephone early Monday night that Will F. Wade, formerly of this section and a son of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Wade, of near Whitney, had been shot and killed in a saloon on the public square at Waco. The name of his slayer is given as Tom Casey, a farmer living int he vicinity of Leroy in the north eastern portion of McLennan County, who was immediately placed under arrest and lodged in jail. It has been impossible to get the true particulars of the homicide or the causes leading up to it, as there have been many conflicting reports in circulation, and the eye witnesses give different versions of the affair. The killing took place in the "Horse Shoe Saloon" on the south side of the public square at Waco, in which establishment the deceased had employment as bartender. Wade was in the office in the front portion of the saloon, and the man who did the killing had just entered. The weapon used was a Winchester shotgun, loaded with No. 8 shot, and the entire charge entered the forehead of the deceased, just above the right eye. The shot was fired at such close range that Wade's face was powder burned and the load tore a ghastly hole the size of a dollar through his head, scattering his brains over portions of nearby furniture and killing him instantly.
There were a number of persons in the saloon, among them the proprietor, who was a witness t the tragedy and who knew some of the facts leading up to it. In conversation with the editor of this paper Tuesday afternoon, he stated that the killing occurred so quickly and there was such excitement and confusion that he was unable to exactly relate everything that transpired. He states that Wade did not know the man who killed him, having never seen him that he knew of before he entered the door and precipitated the difficulty that ended in the tragedy. He states that Wade was in the private office of the saloon, which is a the front, by the main entrance; that Casey entered alone with gun in hand and began to upbraid Wade over the maltreatment of the farmer's son earlier in the evening; that hot words and epithets quickly followed and the shot rang out and Wade fell lifeless. He states that Wade produced his pistol, but whether he had time to use it, or tried to, he does not know; that the pistol was afterward examined, there being four loaded chambers in it, one chamber being unloaded; that the four cartridges showed no sign of having been snapped. The proprietor of the saloon further stated that earlier in the evening, Wade had engaged in a fist fight on Austin Avenue with a man supposed to be named George Maddin, afterwards returning to the saloon; that shortly thereafter, a boy apparently only about 12 years old, entered the saloon with a shotgun and that Wade made him get out of the house; that in a few moments the man who did the killing, and who is suppose to be the father of the boy, appeared with the terrible ending related ...(unable to read copy)... child accompanying them... escort of several members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, of which deceased was a member, also accompanied the corpse and showed all the attention possible. The local hearse carried the bier to the home of S. H. Wade, eight miles southwest of Whitney, where it remained overnight, and interment took place Wednesday afternoon in the Peoria Cemetery. The deceased was well known around Whitney, he having been born and raised here, and was well liked and a clever and peaceable young man. He was 25 years, 2 months and 10 days old. The sad affair is to be deplored by all and the distressed parents and the heart-broken young wife have the fullest sympathy. Deceased had been living at Waco for nearly two years, during which time he had been engaged in the saloon business and tending bar. Prior to that time, except a period in the same business at Hillsboro, he farmed in the vicinity of Whitney, being a good manager, industrious and good for all his contracts. He was a son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. DeArman, also of near Whitney and leaves a wife and one child. He was the eldest of a family of eleven children, the remaining ten all being at home with their parents, and who names are Joe, James, Minnie, Martha, Albert, Robert, John, Mary, Lizzie and Nora. His father is one of our deserving and hard-working farmers and has lived here a long number of years.
The following is taken from the report of the homicide appearing in Tuesday's Waco Times-Herald: There are conflicting statesments concerning the terrible affair. One is to the effect that the deceased and George Madding, who lives near Elm Mott, had previously had som trouble over a business matter, and that the deceased had struck Maddin with an ice pick.
In the evening about 7 o'clock, it is stated, Casey advanced to Wade and brought up the matter of his trouble with Maddin, and that Wade made no denial of have the trouble with him, and said besides that he was able to take care of himself with any man. It is claimed that Casey then took the shotgun from his son and started to raise it, when Wade pulled a pistol from behind the bar and leveled it at Casey, attempting to fire, but the pistol...and then the father had come in to see him about this and...when the two began to talk about the affair, Wade pulled his pistol and attempted to fire, and when it snapped Casey grabbed the gun which was in the hands of his son and shot Wade.
Casey and Maddin and Young Casey were on their way to New Mexico and were going to spend the winter there in hunting and trapping. They were going to make the trip in a wagon, and had it well fitted up for the purpose. They intended spending the night in the city last night and proceeding with their journey this morning.
Case Denied Bail (Waco Times-Herald, Thurs)
The examining trial fo Tom Casey, charged with the murder of Will Wade began yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock and lasted the rest of the afternoon. Quite a lot of testimony was introduced by both the state and the the defense and at 6:30 both sides "rested". Justice Williams announced that he desired to consult some authorities before giving his final decision as to bond and that he would announce his decision this morning. A charge of murder had also been filed against George Maddin, but during the examining thrial there seemed to be no special evidence against this defendant and his bond was fixed at a nominal figure, $300, which was given. A number of witnesses were introduced in the examining trial and their testimony was to some extent conflicting
This morning, soon after eleven o'clock, Justice Williams announced that he would commit Casey to jail without bail. The attorneys for the defense will make application for a habeas corpus trial at once, the case, it is expected, will be set down for hearing at a very early date.1 |
