Following is a copy of a letter presented as written by charlie to his brother jud on jud's wifes death:
starke fla. 2-21-53 Dear brother and family, We were very sorry to learn of the death of your love one and dear mother to your children. You miss her as your father and myself miss our dear old mother or more so. For you were close enough so you could be with her each day. But we must thank god for him to have let her stay with us these many years. we loved her. Now that she has gone on to be with her lord and savior, let's try and meet her when our time comes, of which that is sure, and then there will be no more sorrow. But will be peace and love forever. To our sorrow, we could not be with you. But thought of you in mind and prayer, as you were near and looked on, as they put our loved one away. One of our granddaughters was in the hospital with a fever of 104 6/10. That Saturday was one of the blue days for me, wanting to be with you and could not leave the grand child, and most of us about sick with the flu. Must hurry along, as its four a.m. so be good and come to see us. May the lord be with you and bless you is our prayer. Lovingly Charles and family.1 |

| Note | | Jasper Tolbert Wade as overseeing over 1400 acres of farm land that was near Godwinsville, Georgia for Mr. Harrell. Mr. Harrell gave the newly weds a mule for a wedding present and put aside 40 acres for Wade and Bitha to live on. One mule can work about 20 acres. They primarily grew cotton. The mad $100.00 profit their first year. After a while they bought their first set of furniture, an oak bedroom suite with a shiftrobe. A shriftrobe is a standing closet for storage with drawers and a huge space for hanging things. After they left the farm in Chauncey, Georgia they move to Blyth, near Augusta, Georgia. They ran a rooming house for teachers, at that time all teachers had to be unmarried and they usually livedin a group. One evening everyone went to the school to see a play. While they were gone a curtain blew into a gas lamp on the wall and caught fire, spreading and burning the house down. Only one beautiful rocking chair, on the front portch was saved, that chair had been a wedding present to them. Marion, their daughter, proudly has the chair in her den. After leaving Blyth, they moved to Vidalia, Georgia and ran the new Vidalia hotel. The train stopped there every night and they fed and housed the passengers and crew. Wade opened a barber shop in the lobby. They ran the Telfair Hotel in the old railroad building in Helena, Georgia for 3-4 years, again the train stopped there and provided them with many customers. In 1927, Wade and Bitha opened "The Wade Boarding House" in McRae and he started his barber shop in downtown McRae. Grandma Lowery, Bitha's mom, lived with them for about 40 years. The boarding house had 9 bedrooms and 1 bath, two maids who came in during the day to help and one live-in maid, who helped care for Grandma Lowery when she became disabled.1 |
