Note The Shelburn Baptist Church in Jefferson Township, Grundy County,Missouri located 1 mile south of Hickory, Missouri. The first pastor: H.H. Turner; first deacons: Jerome Rice and Robert J. Wynn. Chartermembers: Jerome D. Rice and wife, Amanda L. Sims, Robert J. Wynn, TaylorProthero, Nancy E. Wynn, William P. Robinson, Mary J. Robinson, MaryCole, Annie E. Bennett, and Nancy J. Bennett.

First Church: The group that started this church was active as early as1868; however, the organization did not come until April 24, 1869, with16 members. In the June, 1869, minutes a building committee wasappointed. The first church was built of narrow lumber, with the samenumber of windows as the present church. In fact, according totradition, the first church was much like the present church. It isdoubtful if there was music in the first church. It burned early in1870.

Second Church: In 1872 the church grounds were purchased from EleanorGee and Husband, for $30.00. In October, 1874, work began on the 2ndchurch 'On the site now laying in ashes'. Second church was dedicatedJune 27, 1875. This church was struck by lighting September 17, 1932,and burned to the ground.

Third Church: Built in 1934, it is the present Shelburn Church. Thecemetery grounds still belong to the Gee Family and to those who havepurchased plots. The cemetery organization is entirely separate from thechurch organization. The first grave in the cemetery was that of FannieBoyle. The cemetery was originally a corn field, and they had to cutaway some corn to bury her. Prior to this time, most of the Shelburnfolks buried their families in a little plot in the pasture or yard. When the Shelburn cemetery was started, with the burial of Fannie Boyle, then the other members transferred their graves to this cemetery.1
