Ignatz Edward Ott lived in Alsace, Lorraine when he made his FirstCommunion.

Alsace, the Crossroad of Cultures

Located between a chain of low mountains called Les Vosges, and theFrench, German and Swiss borders, this region has a very rich andmulti-cultural history. Now under French law, and at times in the pastunder German law, inhabitants usually speak a unique dialect close toGerman, but everyone understands French. Alsace is famous for it's quaint15th and 16th century architecture, much of which is still in use today. The Alsace houses are made of straw and clay, with visible wooden beamsmatching the facades with their refined geometry. Balconies are decoratedwith spiral turned wood, and windows are often framed with livelysculptures. Alsace is also well known for its hand-painted furniture, itsstorks, (a symbol of this region), and its food specialties: sauerkraut, white wines, Munster (cheese) and tarts. Finally, the first traditionalChristmas trees were probably celebrated in Alsace in the middle of the19th century, before being adopted by the rest of France. First, thefarmers hung apples from the branches of firs. Later, they were turnedinto the nice Christmas balls we use nowadays.1
