(O)Mahony

There are a great many O'Mahonys in Ireland - the name is included, usually without the prefix O, among the hundred commonest surnames. itbelongs almost exclusively to West Munster, the great majority of Mahonyand O'Mahony births being registered in Co. Cork, particularly in thearea associated historically with the O'Mahony sept. Their chieftainswere powerful, being often described as princes. Their principalterritory comprised the modern barony of Kinelmeaky and extended to thesea, with a fortified castle called Rosbrian off the coast of south-westCork. The name O Mathghamhna - in modernized spelling O'Mahuna - isderived from their ancestor Mathghamhan, whose mother was a daughter ofBrian Boru. Mathghamhan is the Irish word for a bear. He was killed, withmany more of the Desmond fighting men, at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014.Another famous soldier of the name was Count Daniel O'Mahony (d. 1714),general in the Irish Brigade in the service of France and hero of thebattle of Cremona, the best known of the many O'Mahonys who served withdistinction in the French and Spanish armies. John O'Mahony 91816-1877)of Kilbeheny near Mitchelstown, was the celebrated Fenian leader. In theliterary sphere the best-known is Sylvester Mahony (1804-1866), who underthe pseudonym of Father Prout was the author of 'The Bells of Shandon'and other poems associated with Cork. Father Francis O'Mahony, Provincialof the Irish Franciscans from 1626-1629, was also known as Father FrancisMatthews. Matthews is rare as an anglicized form of O'Mahony, but notunusual in Ulster as a synonym of MacMahon.
