OccupationRev William Semple Basket's occupation was Baptist Preacher.1
Note-ShackelfordHe William Semple Basket was my 5th great-grand uncle.
---------------------------------------------
Elder William Baskett (a Baptist preacher) had a plantation ('Ellerslie')located near Wilmington, Virginia. The old, two-story brick home wasstill standing in 1995.

William Baskett was a descendant of John Baskett, the King's Printer inLondon. He was one of the early dissenter preachers in Virginia who leftthe established church before the War of Independence and became acelebrated Baptist preacher of that state. The Virginia Colony hadestablished an Episcopal State Religion from England which collectedtaxes. Any other minister was called a 'dissenter' and as such wasforbidden to perform marriages. The Laws of Virginia, Act XII, HenningsStatutes, was the vehicle for this mandate. Children born of thesemarriages were declared illegitimate and the early records of Virginiawere filled with lawsuite questioning the rights of these children toinherit.

The first Baptist preacher in Meade County was Squire Boone. This manfrom all the evidence available certainly preached at a rude hunting campat the Blue Spring near the head of Doe Run. Next in order came WarrenCash, born in Virginia April 4, 1760. After serving four years in theRevolutionary War, he and Susannah Basket, daughter of Rev. WilliamBasket, a Virginia Baptist preacher, were married in November 1783. Inthe fall of the next year Warren Cash came to Kentucky. His wife taughthim to read and write. In 1799 William Hickman and John Penny ordainedhim to the gospel ministry. He came to this section in March 1806. Underhis ministry Benjamin and Enos Keith and John Rush were called to theministry. He adhered to the anti-missionary party in this section. Hedied September 15, 1850.
