Homicide Near Bagdad

A gentleman who resides near the scene of the tragedy has related to theparticulars of a personal encounter on the 25th inst., in which Mr. P.H.Roberts was killed by Mr. George Perkins. It seems that an old grudgeexisted between the parties, and that they met on the day mentioned nearthe residence of Alexander Perkins close to the county line betweenFranklin and Shelby, and some six miles from Bagdad. Roberts being atwork and Perkins passing by, the former hailed the latter and said he wasgoing to whip him, at the same time starting toward him pistol in hand.Perkins, who had passed fifteen or twenty steps beyond Roberts, seeinghim advance ordered him to halt. As Roberts continued to advance Perkinsdrew a pistol and shot him through the heart. The wounded man died almostinstantly, and his adversary proceeded to Frankfort and surrenderedhimself to the authorities. He was admitted to bail in the sum of $200,to appear before an examining court at Frankfort on Monday next.

ARMSTRONG

Gaelic Name: Mac Ghillieláidir
Motto: Invictus maneo (I remain unvanquished)
Lands: Liddesdale
Origin of Name: Strong arm

History
The Armstrongs are a significant border clan whose origins lie inCumberland, south of the frontier between Scotland and England that wasofficially established in 1237. The Armstrong name has a mythologicalorigin, in that it is said their heroic progenitor, Fairbairn, saves hisking of Scotland in battle, and not from a wild beast as is the case withanother Border clan - the Turnbulls.

The first specific reference locating them in Liddesdale, which wouldbecome their family seat, is in 1376. Liddesdale was also the seat oftheir unquestioned power in the region that allowed them to expand intoAnnandale and Eskdale to accommodate their growing population. It isreputed that by 1528 they were able to put 3000 horsemen in the field.

The Armstrongs' relationship with subsequent Scottish kings was turbulentto say the least. The most notorious event in this uneasy relationshipoccurred in 1530. John Armstrong, known in history as 'Gilnockie', waspersuaded to attend a meeting at Carlingrigg with King James V who, unknown to Gilnockie, had the malicious intent to silence the rebelliousBorderers. The ruse succeeded as Gilnockie and fifty followers werecaptured.

The Royal order to hang them was issued and despite several pleas for theKing to be lenient in exchange for obedience, it was carried out.

In 1587 an act was passed by the Scottish parliament 'for the quietingand keeping in obediance of the inhabitants of the Borders, Highland andIsles ...' That contained a roll of Chieftains and clans that confirmsthe status of Border families as an important part of clan history, andthe Armstrongs as perhaps the most significant Border clan.

Regimental History
Fifty-fourth Infantry (Mounted)
KENTUCKY
(1-YEAR)

Fifty-fourth Infantry (Mounted). -- Col., Harvey M. Buckley;
Lieut.Col., John G. Rogers; Maj., John D. Russell.

Col. Buckley's well known character enabled him to recruit
this regiment in a short time and it was mustered into service
at New Castle, Henry county, in Sept., 1864. The men were all
from that immediate section of the state.

In December the regiment moved to Crab Orchard, being then
under command of Lieut.-Col. Rogers, Col. Buckley commanding
the brigade to which it was attached in the second expedition
to Saltville.

The regiment returned to Lexington and remained on duty in
that section of the state during the remainder of the winter,
going from place to place by detachments, as occasion
required. It was continued in service during the following
spring and summer and was mustered out Sept. 1, 1865.
