    William Gilbert, 91, of Fort Mitchell, died Tuesday, March 26, at St. Elizabeth Hospice in Edgewood. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia, of Fort Mitchell; son, Michael (Shayne), of Santa Clarita, Calif.; grandchildren Jennifer (Michael Mudd), of Florence, and Harley and Taylor, of Santa Clarita, Calif.; brothers Kenneth and Frank and sister Jeanne (Robert) Guffy. Mr. Scroggins was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Patricia (nee Staples). Mr. Scroggins was a retired sales manager for American Airlines and was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. An avid genealogist, Mr. Scroggins' research was published in the book "Leaves of a Stunted Shrub" in 2009. Mr. Scroggins served in the United States Army Air Corps prior to joining American Airlines, where his career took him to Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Philadelphia before he retired to his home state of Kentucky. Born in Louisville, Mr. Scroggins graduated from Lexington Lafayette High School, where he is a member of the school's alumni Hall of Fame.

The brave wives of these brothers fought off the Indians afterthe death of their husbands, saving their children and themselves fromthe Indians. Also mentioned in the account is; Rev. Shortly before dying in Shelby County, Kentucky, March 16, 1816, William Cook III called his brothers, Seth and Abraham, to his home and asked Seth to write out his last will and testament, which was done and reviewed with William for approval. However, William died before signing it. On March 20, 1816 Seth and Abraham signed a statement to this effect and reported it to the Shelby County Court, where it was recorded in May of that year. William willed that his wife Katherine (Catherine) retain possession of his entire estate, excepting a negro slave named Peter, who was to be freed upon payment of $50.00, the balanace of $250.00 which Seth Cook and Abraham Bohannon had agreed to pay, as agents for Peter (Shelby County Will Book 3, page 421, transcript, COOK Book).

ABRAHAM C. COOK was born in Shelby County, November 1, 1809, the fifth
of a family of six sons and three daughters born to William and
Catharine (Crutcher) Cook. His father was a native of Virginia, born
about 1756, and died on March 16, 1816. His mother was a native of
Virginia, born about 1756 and died about 1846, a member of the
Missionary Baptist Church. Our subject's paternal grandfather was a
native of Virginia, came to Kentucky in 1790 and settled on a farm near
Lexington, where he died in 1800. His maternal grandfather was a native
of Virginia, came to Kentucky at an early day and settled near
Frankfort. Abraham C. Cook has followed agricultural pursuits, and has
a well cultivated farm of 140 acres. On January 26, 1832, he married
Sarah Cook, of Shelby County. The names of their children are as
follows: Edmund, who died March 4, 1863; Israel C., died August 10,
1835; Henry Squire, Warren C., James C., Isaac M. and Emerine. Mr. Cook
has been a life-long Republican and is an honored and upright citizen.
