'On this 5th day of March in the year of our Lord 1833, county ofFranklin, state of Illinois. John Duncan, age about 70 years, was born inCulpepper County state of Virginia to the best of his recollection about1763. There once was a record of his age, but his father having beenkilled by the Indians in 1772 or 3, his sister took the Bible containingthe record of his age, which has been destroyed.
His father moved to Washington County on the frontier of Virginia in 1771or 2 and was killed in about the twelvemonth after by the Indians. Hestated that the whole neighborhood were forted up at Duncan's fort, hisfather's residence and after his father was killed, they employed oneJames Green to spy out two or 3 times a week, ten or 15 miles round thefort. His mother married again [another source says to Melcher Oyler] andmoved to Kentucky some time in the year 1780 just before the battle ofthe Blue Lick where Colonels Todd Trigg and Daniel Boone's second sonwere killed. John was ordered to the Blue Lick but being tired and justoff a long journey in moving, he did not go. But was immediately orderedout to guard the forts in which service he was employed two months. Hehad no officer but was employed as a spy in guarding and protecting theforts mostly English station. He then moved to Tennessee about 2 years after and shortly after wentback to Kentucky and joined General Clark's expedition against theIndians as a substitute. He marched from the falls of Ohio, where hejoined the expeditions under Captain Price to Post Vincent, nowVincinnes. They found the post occupied by French and 30 or 40 Indiansand took the Indians prisoners. In 1778, he served as a private(substitute for William Mannyfield) under Colonel Barnett.
He then returned home and was again employed in a tour of two monthsservice as a spy and guard, on Red River in Tennessee in which service hehad no skirmish or encounter with the Indians. He volunteered again theyear he does not now recollect under Capt. John Rains in an expeditionundertaken by him and Capt. Thomas Johnson against the Indians. Theyraised 80 or 90 men and marched down Elk River for some distance whenthey discovered Indian sign. They camped however on Duck River that nightand next morning, it being thought advisable, he with 8 or 9 othervolunteered as spies. While creeping through the thick corn, they cameupon the Indian encampment and one of the spies fired on and killed oneof the Indians, the forces coming up and the Indians being dispersed. They returned home.
He was again ordered out for two months as a spy near Palmyra onCumberland River. He served 40 days when returning home to look after hisfamily. He hired his brother to serve the remaining 20 days.
Subsequently again, he was ordered out in a light horse company toNashville in Tennessee and there go in pursuit of the Indians under thecommand of Col. Robert Hays, under an apprehension from the report of oneDurock and a half breed, that the Indians intended attacking and takingNashville. But the Indians not making the attack at that time. GeneralRobinson ordered the men to return home but to be ready at a minuteswarning. A few nights after, he received a summons to repair immediatelyto Nashville and started next morning, but when he arrived the Indianswere gone. They however had attacked Buchanan's station on Mill Creeknear Nashville. The Indians were about 6 or 700 strong, the station about20. The Indians approached in the evening and demanded who commanded thefort and upon being told, demanded the gates to be opened and uponrefusal commenced firing. They fought all night but no lives were lost inthe fort. One Indian rushed up with a torch to fire the fort and waskilled. The only one the whites found though they thought from the signsthey killed a great many more. The Indians were commanded by Doubleheads.
John Duncan was again employed in an expedition under Captain BenjaminMcIntosh, down Cumberland River for the purpose of burying Col.Montgomery and Evan Shelby who had been killed by the Indians. At anothertime, the Indians came into his neighborhood, killed a young lady andtook some horses. He with others immediately pursued but were unable toovertake them on account of high water.
He was engaged in many more similar expeditions and in likewise for manyyears always being prompt and ready at his country's call, living in acountry in a constant state of alarm and liable to be called on at anymoment. He never was regularly mustered into or out of service. He neverwas discharged regularly. He received some little pay but does not nowrecollect how much. He never was regularly enrolled in any company unlessit might be General Clarks or Colonel Hays. He knows of no living witnesswho can testify personally as to his service or as to the events of theperiod, but Col. Thomas M. Dorris and clergyman Dempsey Odom, citizensand neighbors can testify as to the tradition of his services.
There follows a series of legal communication trying to determine datesand sequences in which case John's lawyer continually reminds the pensionboard of his clients old age and subsequent loss of memory, he cannotswear positively as the precise length of his service but recollected tothe best of his ability. On Sept 1833, he received $64.98 for arrears tothe 4th of Sept, 1833 and semi-annual allowance under Revolutionary Claimact 6-7-1832.
After John's death, Lydia Spiller Duncan applied to obtain the benefit ofthe act of Congress of the 7th of July, 1838 entitled an act grantinghalf pay and pensions to certain widows. 9-7-1841, Lydia appeared beforethe county commissioner court of Williamson age 70 years stating that sheis the widow of John Duncan, deceased, who was a private in the Army ofthe Revolution War. She has no other proof as the time he entered theservice then is to be found on the records for his pension. She furtherdeclares that she has no family record to refer to having had her houseburned and the records in it. Many years ago, she was married to JohnDuncan, after he left the service of the United States but previous tothe first day of January 1794, that is to say on the 10th day of March,1786 in Robertson County, State of Tennessee by John Grammer, aclergyman, and that she had never been married to any other person. Shefurther declares that she does not know how to get the records of hismarriage from Tennessee for they were married by a clergyman publishingthe banns of matrimony without Lisons (?license). She further declaresthat her husband died on 12-31-1834 in the county of Franklin and stateof Illinois but since his death the county of Franklin has been dividedinto Franklin and Williamson Co. in which she now resides.
Lydia was supported in her testimony by William Spiller, Sr. aged 72.John and Lydia were married in his presence 1786 and that Lydia has beena resident of Williamson CO, formerly Franklin CO upwards of 20 years andis now very feeble and infirm. County clerk certified the William SpillerSr. is a man of known respectability. Frederick F. Duncan was a countycommissioner helping Lydia with her claim. Lydia's claim was rejectedbecause it was found that John's alleged service was principally afterthe termination of the Revolutionary War and was of a character notprovided for by the act of June 7, 1832. Had the Dept. been in possessionof the information which it now has, the claim under that act would nothave been allowed. The first tour of two months is alleged to have beenperformed in 1780 about the time of the battle of Blue Licks in KY and in2 years thereafter he again performed on tour of service. The battle ofthe Blue Licks took place in 1782, consequently the other alleged servicewas after the termination of the War...'
