John Barrow Lightfoot was ca 1750 and died ca 1825. He was the oldestson of Major William Lightfoot and Elizabeth. He was born and raised inCulpeper Co., VA. Aside from his marriage to Lavenia Duncan in 1770little is recorded about his early life. His father (Major William)served in the French and Indian Wars and saw service and furnishedsupplies in the Revolutionary War. It is likely that John served duringthe Revolutionary Was but there is no documentation of his service. Thereis no record of him purchasing property until 1786 when he bought 167acres in Brumfield Parish in the fork of the Rappahanock River on thebranches of the Butler Swamp from a certain Charles Halloway. He soldthis land to a John Mason in 1794, perhaps in anticipation of hismigration to Kentucky. He likely played a major part in organizing thefamily expedition to Kentucky. The move, according to oral familyhistory, was the result of the familys involvement in the MethodistRevival Movement and their efforts to establish a community that wassupportive of their religious beliefs. The party consisting of almostthe entire William Lightfoot family including wives and children, andgrandchildren would have numbered about 60 persons. Their family bibleundoubtedly accompanied them and has never been recovered or registeredwith the Lightfoot Association or any recognized genealogical agency. The only subsequent records relating to John Barrow Lightfoot are basedon correspondence between his sister Frances in KY, writing to herbrother Phillips in VA. It is recorded that John B. Lightfoot startedand taught the first school in Pendleton Co., KY.

Lavinia Duncan was the daughter of Robert Duncan and Ann Gallop ofCulpeper Co., VA. She was born ca 1755 in Stafford, VA, and died inPendleton Co., KY.
