Following provided by Mike Warren: Wealth and Democracy: A Political History of the American Rich by Kevin Phillips Broadway Books, New York, 2002 Page 21 Southern planter wealth, burgeoning after the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, was also generally in the Jeffersonian camp. The leading plantation owner in the early-nineteenth-century was Wade Hampton I of South Carolina, rich from cotton and sugar. He died in 1835 with assets well short of Girard's. (Mike Warren's note: Stephen Girard of Philadelphia. He left $6.5 million at his death in 1831.) Nathaniel Heward, whose South Carolina rice holdings made him that state's grandest planter, owned two thousand slaves and left a $2 million estate in 1851. The 1850's, with slave prices 300 percent to 400 percent above 1800 levels, brought the South its highest post independence share of U. S. capital and wealth in the 1860, two-thirds was in slaves, and within the five cotton states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina, slaves accounted for nearly 60 percent of all agricultural wealth. Keven Phillips has taken up the practice of giving only the vaguest indication of sources. There may have been multiple Tinsley Wades and multiple Sister Carrolls but I am guessing there was only one such marriage which became associated with multiple people or the people are duplicated. |
