'MEMORIES OF YESTERYEAR'

Many sacrifices were made by all 10 of the Mahoney children and theirfather to stay together after the death of their mother at age 39 in1922. However, due to the young ages of the children, at some point, they were sent to live with relatives and some to boarding schools, suchas my mother, while their father kept up his store on Main St. forawhile. Catherine was only 12 yrs old when her mother died. Theyoungest, Louis was only 3 weeks old. The oldest girl married 4 yrs afterthe death of their mother, leaving the younger girls to take control ofthe duties. Catherine was enrolled at Bethlehem Academy in Bardstownshortly after the death of her mother and was cared for by the Sisters ofCharity. John Winfred Mahoney, their father, with great sorrow latergave up the homestead in New Haven where all 12 children were born, andset up housekeeping in Louisville, Ky., bringing all the children withhim except the two married ones and Jack who had moved out of town.

Later, when high school age, Catherine was enrolled in Sacred HeartAcademy in Louisville, Ky. She didn't finish her schooling at SacredHeart because she was needed to help, along with her other sisters, tocare for their younger brothers. Their father at that time was workingfor the L.& N. Railroad. Twelve years later, John Winfred Mahoney(Wigg), died at the young age of 53 years. All 10 of the Mahoneychildren survived the untimely deaths of their parents and becamestrong, perservering adults with a special love of family.
