Note-ShackelfordHe William Willett Jr. was the second son born to Wm. Willett and MaryGriffith. In a deposition given on 4/18/1789 he gave his age as 46, inPrince George's Co.,Md. William initially had his dwelling house onproperty called ' Bealington' bequeathed to him by his father. WilliamWillett, termed planter, sold to his brother Edward Willet # (23) hisshare of 'Bealington' on 1/16/1773 ( Deed BB#3:205). Here WilliamWillett and his family resided until they moved to Ky.

In the Pottenger Papers at the Filson Club in Louisville, Ky. is a letterwritten by William Harrison Willett, William Willett's grandson to SamuelForrest Pottenger in 1901. The names of William Willett's children havebeen taken from this letter and the dates of birth approximated fromsensus records.

William Willett was a road supervisor in 1767. In 1782 he was tosupervise the road from Blandensburg to Snowden's Iron Works where he hadhis place of business. In 1782, 1783, and 1786 William Willett receiveda license to operate an 'ordinary.' He apparently ran his business untilhe moved to Ky. in 1791 or 1792.

An ordinary was a tavern where travelers lodged for the night, received astable and fodder for their horse, as well as their own food. One night'slodging cost 7 shillings and 6 pence and for the horse's keep it was 1additional shilling. Wine cost 5 or 6 shillings a quart and rum 2shillings a quart.

In the 1776 census of Prince George's Co., William Willett age 43 isgiven with his wife Mary, four sons, and two daughters. In 1778 WilliamWillett took the Patriot's Oath of Fidelity and support in Samuel W.Magruder's return in Price George's Co. (Box 4:16.6). In the 1790census William Willet's family consisted of five boys, two girls and twoslaves.

From a Chancery Record (B#34:2311-235) it is known about when WilliamWillett moved from Maryland to Kentucky. 'In 1791Gabriel PetersonVanhorn purchased of William Willett of then said county 'Scott's Fancy'containing 114 acres for which Gabriel paid 200 poundscurrency money, 2horses with a stage waggon and harness complete. On October 7, 1791William Willett executed a deed for the said land, Gabriel failed to havethe deed recorded as the law required. William Willett has since removedto the State of Kentucky.' The deed was then shown in which Mary Willettthe wife of the said William relinquished her right to dower.

William Willett was one of the last of his family to arrive in NelsonCo., Va.(later the State of Ky.) His mother and all of his livingbrothers and sisters except Edward Willett and Griffith Willett as wellas most of the brothers and sisters of his wife had already moved toNelson Co. and Bullitt Co. William arrived in time to see his agedmother before her death in 1794.

On 6/11/1792 in Nelson Co., Ky. William Willett, Jr. purchased 500 acresof land from Samuel Pottenger and his wife, Jane (Deed 4:568). On3/5/1798 William and Mary Willett (Deed 7:300) sold 98 acres onPottenger's Creek back to Samuel Pottenger off the west end of the 500acre survey which had been conveyed to William. Mary Willett made hermark. Sometime between this deed of sale in 1798 and 1803 Mary died.

On 5/10/1796 in Nelson Co.,Ky. William Willett was appointed as surveyorof the roads (Order Book 1793-1797 :167). On 4/4/1803 it was ' Orderedthat the Clerk of the court bind Joseph Woodland unto William Willettuntil he arrives at the age if 21 yrs. to learn the art of shoe maker.'(Order Book Aa:253).

On 3/20/1814 William Willett wrote his short will (C:264) which reads asfollows:

Note-ShackelfordWilliam Willett William Willett & Mary Griffith were my 6th great-grandparents.
------------------------------------------
William Willett Sr. lived on land called 'Bealington' for his entirelife. In the 1733 census of Prince George's Co., William was dwelling inhis father's home. About four years later William married Mary Griffith, the dau. of George Griffith of Dorchester, Md.

According to the will of his father, Edward Willett, William received a43 acre tract of land called 'Beall's Craft' and the home plantation ofhis father called ' Bealington'. Besides land his father bequethed 'unto My Said Son William Willett all My Pewterers Moulds and Other Toolsthereunto Belonging provided he Doth make what necessary pewter the restof my children shall want for their own proper use in their house theyfinding Metle.' With his brothers Thomas Willett and James Willett andhis sister Ann Swan he received two tracts of land called 'Little Doan'and 'Horserace' and the personal estate of his father.

William Willett did carry on the peweterer business of his father. Inthe Maryland Gazette on Thursday 1/18/1756 and for the six Thursdaysthereafter William ran the fiollowing ad, 'William Willett, Pewetererliving about 2 miles from Upper Marlborough on the Blandensburg Road nowmoulds old Pewter at 9d per pound or will return one half good new Pewterfor any quanity of old and to be cast in whatever forms the employerpleases, either flat or soup dishes, or flat or soup plates. N.B. Hewill wait on any employer within 20 or 30 miles to receive their old orreturn their new pewter, and they may depend on being faithfully andhonestly dealt with.'

A statement is made in the book, ACROSS THE YEARS IN PRINCE GEORGE'S BYBOWIE (P 403-404) THAT 'MOST OF THE PEWTER WARE THAT WENT TO KENTUCKY INEARLY DAYS WAS MADE BY WILLIAM WILLETT OF PRINCE GEORGE'S CO., MD. ANDSOME BY HIS FATHER EDWARD.'

William Willett Sr. was also a planter. In a land dispute in 1786 a mapwas drawn of 'Bealington' and the exact spot where his house was locatedwas the marked ( Plat # 106). In the court proceedings (JudgmentsJG#4:38-49) it is known that William Willett, Sr. be appointed overseerof Mount Calvert Hundred Upper Part 'in the Room of William Willett.'

At the 6/1768 court (i:680) 'William Willett Senior prefers to thecoourt here his Petition for his Negro woman named Sall to be levy freefor the future----Petitioner have effect of his prayer.' Later he made asimiliar plea for his negro man who had rheumatism and was unable to work.

Two orphans were placed under the care of William Willett. In Court(CC:156) held 11/1743 'Philip Grimes an orphan age 3 years is bound toWilliam Willett and his assigns untill he arrive to the age of 21 yrs.and the said William Willett in his proper person in Court here Promisesto give the said Philip one year schooling and at the Expiration thereofto give him a Decent Suit of Apparell.' In the 3/1744 Court (CC:275)'John Grimes age 7 years the 25th instant is by the Court here bound toWilliam Willett of Prince George's County Planter and his assigns untillhe arrive to the age of 21 years and the said William Willett in hisProper person in Court here Promises during the term aforesaid to Learnthe said John Grimes to read Distinctly in the Bible and at theExpiration of his time of Servitude to give him a Decent Suit of Apparel.'

William Willett SR, owned the following tracts of land: his homeplantation 'Bealington' which contained 255 acres, 26 1/2 acres called'Chaffey's Delight,' 26 1/2 acres called 'Little Doan,' 43 acrescalled 'Bealls Craft,' and 8 acres called 'Reston's Addition,'

William Willett wrote his will ( 39:25 ) on 7/10/1772 and it was probated8/27/1772. The copy of his original will is found in the Willett Bookpublished by Sr. Mary Louise Donnelly.

As stated in the will of William Willett the rest of my Goods andChattles to be equally divided amongst all my children (The three abovementioned only Excepted).' The three sons to be excepted were EdwardWillett, William Willett, Jr. and Griffith Willett whose legacy had beengiven to them in land. In the Balance of Final Distribution ( 6:120 ) on11/27/1773 the final accounting of his estate which amounted to -L321:16:6 'was distributed among eleven children of the deceased namedElizabeth, Verlinda, Jemina, Tabitha, Ann, Samuel, George, John, Rachel,Mary and James.' In all this shows that William Willett and MaryGriffith were the parents of fourteen children. All of their childrenwere born in Prince George's Co.,Md. on their home plantation of'Bealington.'
