Kyx3 ====================== State Couple Married 71 Years Ago in Franklin County Thursday, March 24, 1938 FRANKFORT, KY, March 24 (AP) - New claimants to the title of beingKentucky's longest married couple are Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Quire ofFranklin County. The old couple is agreed the ceremony took place 71years ago, but they fail to agree on who the preacher was who tied theknot. Thomas Quire says it was Brother Roberts (first name long sinceforgotten) who united the couple. Mrs. Quire says they were married by a'Brother Peters.' But, then 71 year is a long time to remember even soimportant a thing as the name of the preacher at your own wedding, theold couple will tell you. And another reason they seem a little bit hazyon the subject is that Mrs. Quire was only 13 when she married; Quire wasonly 19 years old when the stood together before the preacher. It was 67years ago that their first son, Robert, now night watchman for the statehighway department, was born. Seven more children were born to thecouple, five of whom are still living. Twenty-four grandchildren, 18grandchildren and one great-great grandson of the couple are stillliving. Both Quire, now 90, and Mrs. Quire, now 84, were born in thesame magisterial district in which they now live. Census indicate, John was a blacksmith by trade. On June 17, 1878 in Franklin County, Kentucky, John married Margaret Ann 'Mag' Goins, born in June 1859. She was the daughter of Lewis F. Goins and Lucretia Rice Goins. John and Margaret were the parents of the following known children. Robert E. 'Lee'Harrod, born October 1880, James William Harrod, born July 1882, John Leslie Harrod, born September 1885, Pearl Harrod, born September 1887, Horace G. Harrod, born 1889, George Washington Harrod, born September 28, 1893, Julia G. Harrod, born April 1896, Mayme J. Harrod, born November 14,1899, Corine E. | Obituary | December 4, 1920 | An obituary for John Louis Harrod appeared on December 4, 1920 in The State Journal, Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky. ------------------------------------------------- Wiley Obit Scrapebook John Harrod, 66, one of Frankfort's best known citizens, died at his homeyesterday morning at 5 o'clock after an illness of some time of a complication of diseases. He was a native of this county and the son of the late Horace Harrod, widely connected in this and adjoining counties. Mr. Harrod leaves nine children, residents of this county, four daughters, Misses Julia, Mamie, Corinne and Mrs. Purley Dowden; five sons, Lee, James, Leslie, Horace and George Harrod; three sisters, Mrs.James Moore, Mrs. Minnie Quire and Mrs. Annie Chism; and two brothers, Morgan and Charley Harrod. Mr. Harrod's wife died ten years ago. The funeral will take place this afternoon. The State Journal, Frankfort Ky, Saturday, December 4, 1920.2 |
