| Note-Shackelford | Miguela Gonzales y Libunao Miguela was the first and only member of her family to marry outside of her race and to move from rural life to urban living. Miguela and James raised their children in Manila. Miguela was left a widow at the early age of 47 yrs. Miguela and her children and grandchildren survived the Japanese Occupation of WW II. The first floor of their home was taken over by the Japanese to use as a Command Center because it was built of brick (which was unusual for that climate) and was strategically located on high ground just outside of Manila. In 1955, at age 66, Miguela made her first plane trip to the US. She loved to travel and made numerous trips between the Philippines and the States. In 1970, at age 82, she made her final trip back to the Islands where she died on Dec. 6, 1990 at the age of 102 years. Her daughter Minnie died on the very same day 8 years later. Note: One of the customs of the people of the Philippines is that thewomen are identified by the surnames of both parents. The y is pronounced 'ee' and means and. | Note-Shackelford | Albert Kellogg During WW II, Bert was a sailor in the US Navy. He was captured by theJapanese at Corregidor and survived the infamous Bataan Death March. Albert & Nellie's Fathers (Almer X. Kellogg and James Wm. Stevenson) mustered into the US Army together on May 9, 1898 at Helena, Montana as privates in Company I, 1st Reg. Montana Infantry and served together in the Spanish-American War. Almer Kellogg and James Stevenson both remained in the Philippines, married filipino brides and raised theirfamilies there. They maintained a strong friendship over the years. Almer was best man at James and Miguela's wedding. When Bert's Mother died at a young age, his only sister (FlorenceKellogg) went to live with James and Miguela Stevenson and was raised along with their owndaughters Louisa, Minnie and Nellie.
