John J. Shackelford married Polly Neville, daughter of Robert Neville,November 10, 1825, in Henry County, Ky. He was a brother of James andAmbrose Grayson Shackelford, perhaps. Or was he?

Since Frances Duncan & Wm. Shackelford (parents of James Shackelford)marr'd in Bourbon Co.,Ky*. in 1797, they would have had to go back to Va.for John .to be born in Caroline in 1802. (SEE BOURBON CO. VA. IN HISTORYBELOW) James was born in 1798 in Ky. as per census info. or in Va. asper LDS & 1 Gedcom. Perhaps John and Jas. are NOT brothers.? They justlived in the same county of Henry in Ky at the same time.

History
*Bourbon County, Kentucky actually began as Bourbon County, Virginia in1785, when it was created from Fayette County, Kentucky (previously alsoin Virginia). It comprised a much larger area than the present-dayBourbon County; the rest of its former territory is now divided betweenthe following present-day Kentucky counties: Bracken, Boone, Campbell,Clark, Estill, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Harrison, Kenton, Mason,Montgomery, Lewis, Nicholas, Pendleton, Powell, and Robertson.

Note: This could be the confusion of whether James Shackelford was bornin Va. or Ky.

LEGENDARY HISTORY OF THE SHACKELFORD FAMILY

The legendary history of this family commenced with Baron Jaques Le Forte(a nobleman of Normandy ). He was an officer in the army of William, Dukeof Normandy, during his invasion of England in the Year 1066.

Ancestors of the Shackelfords (le) came from France in 1066 with Williamthe Conqueror who overran England in that year. They were given land inGodlaming Parish, Surrey Co, Eng. They called themselves Wm. DeShackelford, Henry De (of) Shackelford etc. They eventually dropped the'De'. They settled in the Village of Shackelford, which still existstoday.

William I, 'the Conqueror', granted him lands for his service and hesettled in England. His children intermarried with the Brittons andSaxons. The name changed frequently until Henry IV, when Henry DeShackelford , then a gentleman in waiting to Henry V (Merry Hal). About1500, William De Shackelford, another descendant, was officer of thehousehold of Henry VII. The ancestral seat of the family was Golddaming,Surry County, with the Village of Shackelford. This passed from thefamily in 1620: the residence was burned circa 1700. The land and thevillage being now part of the estate of the Earl of Middleton. William, agrandson of the above, supported the cause of the Huguenots, and in 1550fled to France and joined the army of Henry of Navarre. He married a MissSt. Pierre and from continued persecution left France and settled in theNetherlands where both he and his wife died. His son joined the army ofCharles I and followed his fortunes until his arrest. Roger Shackelfordis the immigrant, arriving in America in 1666.
