• [S549] Martin Snook; War of 1812 Pension File;
    The pension file includes five cards from Martin Snook's military service during the War of 1812, plus correspondence and other papers regarding Jane Snook's War of 1812 Widow's Pension.
    All of the cards are pre-printed as 2 Regiment of Ohio Volunteers and Militia commanded by Col. James Findlay. Four of the five cards are pre-printed as Capt. David Sutton's company. Those same four cards state the first name as Marts. The five cards include three Company Muster Rolls and two Company Payrolls. The three Muster Rolls are May 31, 1812; June 30, 1812; and August 31, 1812 at Citadel at Detroit. The May 31, 1812 card states 'date of Capt. Hays company'. The June 30, 1812, card states 'transferred to Captain Sutton 28 May 1812'. This card is pre-printed as Captain John Sheets Company of Volunteers with a foot-note 'This company was designated at various times as Capt. Robers Hays' and Capt. John Sheets' company'. This card also states the first name as 'Martin'.
    The first payroll card is not dated and is for a sum of $6.00. The second payroll card is for the period of July 1, 1812 through October 26, 1812, the end of his service. The pay was $6.66 per month for 3 months and 26 days which totalled $23.96. All of the cards were consistent with a six month period of service from 27 Apr 1812 through 26 Oct 1812.
    The correspondence in the file dealt primarily with the fact that Jane Snook filed Claim No. 35,419 as the widow of Martin Snook but his name in most of his military service records and a bounty land claim was recorded as Marts Snook. In Jane Snook's correspondence she stated that Martin Snook served as a private in a regiment of Ohio troops commanded by Col. Sutton. The papers also indicate that Jane Snook stated that Martin Snook was married to Missus Oran who died fifteen months prior to their marriage in the fall of 1832. In another letter Jane Snook states that she always called him 'Martin'; however, Mr. N. K. Snook of Cincinnati, Ohio, a kinsman of Martin Snook, wrote that his proper name was Marts, that he was named for a man named 'Marts'.

She is unable to give dates for what term he volunteered. She has no means of knowing nor does she know how long he served in said war. That his services terminated by reason of an honorable discharge at what date she cannot say but thinks it (---missing page---) respectively that they were present and saw her make her mark to the forgoing declaration, that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her that she is the identical person she represents herself to be.
