J. G. was one of the finest guys you ever met, but he couldn't make a buck. He was a part time Nazarene Preacher, a part time salesman of Singer sewing machines, a part time carpenter, and part time at any other work he could find. He had eleven (11) children (the first one died at birth.) He was either years older than my grandmother when they married. They were living in Kentucky and had to sneak across the Tennessee border to get married, because Laura (his wife) was only 15 and could not get parental permission. They lived with their youngest daughter intheir old age because they were destitute. Sometime between 1901 and 1904 the family moved to Hoopeston, Illinois from Glasgow, Kentucky. Their youngest child was the only one not born in Kentucky.1 |
