Male, #26528, b. December 10, 1861, d. before 1909
Note | | Nicholas Tyler Wade's name was found in the book "David Wade: A Texas Pioneer", written by his son, Houston Wade, this book also stated the following information:
"Our father, Nicholas Tyler Wade, born December 10, 1861. He was named for Nicholas Tyler Ware who lived where Halstead now is. This finishes all that we have to say regarding our family and their experience in Fayette County, except to say that our father lived up to the family tradition and 'was hard to control', to such an extent that he was made constable, and as a peace officer he was in this way forced to maintain the law that he himself, would not obey. He later served as deputy sheriff under both John Rankin and Lyt Zapp. Even as late as 1882 the life of a peace officer in old Fayette County was no Sunday school picnic."1 |

The Handbook of Texas Online Wade, Houston (1882-1947). Houston Wade, collector of Texana and historian, was born in Fayetteville, Fayette County, Texas on August 14, 1882, the son of Tyler and Ida (Meitzen) Wade. He worked for the LaGrange Journal until the early 1900s, when he moved to Houston; there he was employed with the postal service until 1940, when he retired to his farm near Hackberry in Lavaca County. Wade was one of the organizers of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, qv and he served on its state executive committee for many years. He discovered the original document, drawn by Sam Houston, qv that founded the Knights of the Order of San Jacinto, qv an honorary order revived by the Sons of the Republic of Texas in 1941. He worked on the project to compile the first complete list of the men of Capt. Nicholas Mosby Dawson's qv command, who were slain in the Dawson Massacre. Wade wrote articles on Texas heroes that were published, mainly in the 1930s, in the Masonic Texas Grand Lodge Magazine. His books and brochures include An Early History of Fayette County (1936), written in collaboration with Leonie Rummel Weyand; Thumbnail History of Fayette County (1941); and David Wade, A Texas Pioneer (1943). Books that he compiled were The Dawson Men of Fayette County (1932), Masonic Dictionary, Republic of Texas (1935), Notes and Fragments of the Mier Expedition (1937), and David G. Burnet Letters (1944). Wade was also an advocate of historical markers; he took part in the erection of a monument to Father Michael Muldoon near Hostyn and the memborial tower on Monument Hill near LaGrange. He died October 30, 1947, in Hallettsville and was buried in Fayetteville. He was survived by his wife, Ida (Carson).
Bibliography: Houston Post, November 1, 1947 Southwestern Historical Quarterly, Texas Collection, April 1948. Houston Wade, Narrative, Barker Texas History Center, University of Texas at Austin. Houston Wade Papers, Texas State Archives, Austin. From the dedication page of "The Dawson Men of Fayette County", compiled by Houston Wade, comes the following information:
"To the memory of my great grandmother, Ann Brown Wade, who left a comfortable home back in old Kentucky, to follow her man into the wilds of Texas during the time we were a part of the Republic of Mexico. She lies buried in an unmarked, unknown grave somewhere on the banks of Cummins Creek, in the most extreme Eastern point of Fayette County. To the memory of my grandmother, Elizabeth Madison Wade, who left a typical old Southern plantation home back in Mississippi and came to the partly civilized Republic of Texas and helped her husband carve a home out of the wilderness; who lived through the four years of horror known as the Civil War and kept the home fires burning for her loved ones at the front. To the memory of my mother, Ida Meitzen Wade, daughter of a German immigrant, who escaped the tyrannical rule of a despot to seek freedom in the newest addition in the family of states to our glorious union; Texas. 'It takes a hundred men to make a company, but only one woman to make a home', and to the memory of those noble women of our family and those heroines of our Texas, I lovingly dedicate these few lines. May their ashes rest in peace and their souls rejoice in Heaven. Houston Wade"
The following information was given to me on 17 Jan 2001 by Beverly Gray, of LaGrange, Texas, from the book: "Fayette County, Heritage" : HOUSTON WADE Houston Wade was born in Fayetteville, Texas on August 14, 1882. At the time of his death on October 30, 1947, he was survived by his widow and one daughter. He was a respected Fayette County historian and active in many patriotic and historical scholarships. Among his contributions are "The Dawson Men of Fayette County" "Notes and Fragments of the Mier Expedition" ; " David G. Burnet's Letters" ; "Life of David Wade" ; and he co-authored "An Early History of Fayette County". A son of Nicholas Tyler Wade, Houston Wade was the grandson of William Wyatt Wade and a great-grandson of David Wade. David Wade was born in Halifax County, Virgina, in about 1779. He was a soldier in the American Revolution and also the War of 1812. He had married a Miss Ann Brown and eventually settled in Texas in 1833. Along with his wife and two sons, William Wyatt and Joshua Robinson, he was an early settler in the Fayetteville area. The sons of David Wade followed in their father's footsteps and were among the Fayette County men who served in Nicholas Mosby Dawson's Company during the time of the Texas War of Independence from Mexico and participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. Houston Wade was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He held many offices and chairmanships in that organization at both the local and state levels. He was made a corresponding member of the Texas Knights of Columbus historical Commission in 1936. He was of great assistance to the late Louis W. Kemp in locating the graves of many early Texas heroes and having their graves marked during the Texas Centennial. He called Father Micheal Muldoon, Chaplain of the Austin Colony, " the forgotten man of Texas History", and waged a one-man battle to have the monument erected to him. Through Houston Wade's efforts, the organization of the Knights of San Jacinto, the highest honor in the State of Texas, was revived by the sons of the Republic of Texas in 1941. A sword belonging to Sam Houston, originally given to him by the Holland Lodge, came into the possession of Houston Wade and has been used to knight each of the Knights of San Jacinto. Houston Wade made a great contribution to the recorded history of Fayette County, and no doubt has been truly an inspiration to others who follow him. by Freytag Files and Mary Hall
From the Fayette County Record, November 4, 1947: Houston Wade, Famed Historian, Laid To Rest Houston Wade, one of Texas's foremost historians, was buried Saturday at Fayetteville, in the community in which he was born 65 years ago. Death came to mr. Wade in a Hallettsville hospital Thursday folliwng a week's illiness. The body was brought to the Koenig Funeral Home where services were conducted Saturday morning by Dr. Guy B. Duff of the Presbyterian Church. B. F. Harigel spoke briefly on the life and work of the deceased, praising him for his tireless research and writings on the history of Texas. The remains were taken to Fayetteville where the last rites were in charge of the Masonic lodge. Burial was in the city cemetery. The deceased was the son of Tyler and Ida Meitzen Wade whose home was at Fayetteville. Early in life he became interested in Texas history and through his years of employment in the Houston post office, he continued that interest. Following his retirement, several years ago he devoted much of his time to research and writing. He published several books and pamphlets o the subject and collected a great amount of historical material which is now in the state's archives for posterity. Mr. Wade also took an important role in seeing that Fayette county's heroes of the past were properly remembered. He had a large part in the erection of the memorial tower to the Dawson Men and the Men of Mier on Monument Hill and assisted in the preparation of the inscriptions on the numerous monuments erected by the state during the Texas Centennial which mark various historic spots in Fayette county. It was through his leadership that a memorial was erected last year near Hostyn to Father Miguel Muldoon, resident pastor of Stephen F. Austin's colony, whose cause Wade championed as the "Forgotten Man of Texas History." Following his retirement, Mr. Wade moved to his farm at Hackberry in Lavaca county. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Ida Carson Wade and one daughter, Miss Estelle Wade of Houston.1
