| Note | | As a teenager, he shot his neighbor and cousin in a schoolhouse incident on 20 December 1893, was convicted of murder, but escaped from jail and was hidden for a time by relatives, after which he immigrated to England. In August 1996, we learned from David C. Anderson that he had a grandfather who used the name Charles Alexander Anderson and had claimed to be the son of Charles Robert Anderson and Mary Martin, both deceased, when he applied for a marriage license on April 29, 1897 in Coatbridge, Lanark County, Scotland to marry Elizabeth Hannen. Per family lore, that Charles was born in Munfordville, Kentucky which he had left in 1892 after a school fight, going first to Canada in 1893 and then to Scotland in 1895. He continued to grow tobacco in Scotland, as proven by a family photo that shows several plants thriving in his vegetable garden! He never came back to the United States, even though his son Charles Alexander Anderson (1897, Coatsbridge, Scotland - 1896) emigrated to the U. S. after World War 1. David found a notebook left by his own father, who had been trying to find information on the family of this Charles Anderson, which included the name "Clarence Henry Wade" and notes indicating that he was born in 1875-76. There seems to be strong circumstantial evidence that this Charles Anderson was our Henry Clarence Wade, who took on a new name and life after escaping from Kentucky.1 |
