Andrew (Jack) Wade joined the Navy and served on the SS Huron after the war, but went to Japan in 1922 to help with the clean up after the bombing. He met my g-grandmother Corlis (Cora) Chang. They moved to San Francisco, where she had been many times as a child. Her father was a diplomat. They had two children, my grandmother and her brother. Andrew dropped dead of a bad heart in the late 1920's while at a dance club. (Ethan recalled how Andrew was a premie at birth and fit into his hand, hence the bad heart, I think.) With no means of support, Cora got on a train to Memphis, Tennessee from San Francisco and appealed to Ethan to help her raise the children. My guess is that Mattie had passed away by this time. Ethan moved to Daly City, California and alone raised my g-uncle and sold newspapers until his death.1 |
