J. S. BASKETT, a successful farmer and stock raiser of Henry County, was
born in Shelby County, February 17, 1832. He is the sixth of seven
children born to James and Mildred (Shepherd) Baskett, natives ofVirginia.
His father immigrated to Kentucky in 1830, settled in Shelby County, near
Bagdad, owned about 700 acres of land, and died March 28, 1863. He was a
son of William Baskett, a Baptist preacher, who was born in Fluvanna
County, Va. William was a grandson of Thomas Baskett, of England, who had
control of the printing of the Bible for sixty years. The mother of our
subject died May 14, 1874. His aunt, Susan Baskett, was the first person
baptized in Kentucky. She married Mr. Cash, a soldier of the Revolution.
Our subject was educated at Lima, N. Y. From 1869 to 1877 he was engaged
extensively in the wholesale whisky [sic] business. In 1870, while a
resident of Shelby County, he became director of the Deposit Bank at
Eminence, and in 1875 was made president, which position he still retains.
In 1876 he removed to Henry County, and located two miles west ofEminence,
has a farm of 221 acres, and is now making a specialty of raising Hereford
cattle. On January 25, 1855, he married Phebe Neal, of Shelby County,Ky.,
daughter of Lewis and Louisa (Lowry) Neal. Six children were born to
their union: Nannie B. Rees, Maggie D. Rowland, Mary L. Hornsby, MinnieS.,
Florence L. Snyder and Loran B. Mr. Baskett is a gentlemen of culture and
ability, a Democrat and a recognized power in party politics.
