One William Shackelford married Frances Duncan, Sept. 5, 1797, in BourbonCounty, Kentucky. One William Shackelford married Sabina Metcalf, February 7, 1799, also inBourbon County, Ky. We have always thought that the above named Williams were one and thesame man, but now our records seem to indicate that they were NOT thesame man.** **Note: The Clans ' reference that Wm. Shackelford did not remarry 2 yrsafter his marriage to Frances comes from the fact that her Will wasdivided in 1807, (he having remarried in 1799). Perhaps the Will was notsettled until 1807 and Wm. did remarry 2 yrs after his first marriage./PSH ---------------------------------------- SHACKELFORDS IN HENRY COUNTY, KENTUCKY (Shackelford Clan Newsletter) 1. Then there were other Shackelfords in Henry Co., one JamesShackelford, said to have been born about 1798, either in Virginia orKentucky; 2. John J. Shackelford married Polly Neville, daughter of Robert Neville,November 10, 1825, in Henry County, Ky. He was a brother of James andAmbrose Grayson Shackelford, perhaps. Or was he? (comment of Clan Mag.) One William Shackelford married Frances Duncan, Sept. 5, 1797, in BourbonCounty, Kentucky. (Clan Magazine) One Frances Shackelford died in Henry County, Ky., and her estate wasdivided in 1807; and among her heirs were the following: James Duncan andhis wife Catherine, William Duncan and William Shackelford. ** **PSH/ Note: Frances Shackelford above left part of her estate to two ofher brothers (James & William Duncan) plus her husband, Wm. Shackelford. Her son was not mentioned since her estate went in part to her spouse andbrothers. James was just 9 yrs old in 1807 when Frances' Will wasprobated. The only way that this William was one & same that marr'd Sabina Metcalfin 1799, 2 yrs after marrying Frances Duncan is if Frances Duncan's Willwas probated for some reason later in 1807. There are 2 possible ways John J. Shackelford could be the son ofWilliam as first mentioned by the Newsletter. (1) John (born 1802) was the son of Sabina Metcalf since Wm. marr'd herin 1799. However, that would mean Frances Duncan (1st wife) died by 1799and her Will wasn't probated until 1807 for some reason. John's birthverified by Wentworth Family Book-Vol 2. This would make James & John,1/2 brothers. ---------------------------------------- James Shackelford formerly of Henry Co.,Ky., died in Clark County, Mo.,August 18, 1887. Permelia Caroline Sibley (wife) was born in Henry Co.,Kentucky, October 8, 1817, and she died in Clark County, Mo., September17, 1906. As before stated, our records show that the above mentioned JamesShackelford's mother was a Miss Strother. But Mrs Mattie Hayden, ofWyaconda, Mo., daughter of James and Permelia CarolineSibley-Shackelford, says that her grandmother, mother of James, was aMiss Duncan. So this indicates that James was not a son of James, butperhaps a son of William Shackelford and Frances Duncan. * * NOTE: The Clan's mention above to the possibility that a Miss Strotherwas the mother of James Shackelford can be explained like this: FrancesDuncan, (James's mother) , was the sister of Mary Duncan who marriedRev.Geo. Duncan Strother. So Mary Duncan Strother was James' aunt. / PSH --------------------------------------- Source 2: Gencircles Gedcom 'Golliher/Detillion' by Maurine Golliher Beckstead --------------------------------- SEE HISTORY BELOW FOR POSS CONFUSION FOR BOURBON CO. --------------------------------------- Kentucky Census, 1810-90 Record Name: WILLIAM SHACKLEFORD State: KY County: Bourbon County Township: No Township Listed Year: 1791 Record Type: Tax list Database: KY Early Census Index ========================== GENCIRCLES: Golliher/Detillion submitted by Maurine Golliher Beckstead William Shackleford Spouse: Frances Duncan (Wife) b. 19 Mar 1772 in Culpeper Co.,Virginia Father: James Duncan b. 18 Jul 1746 in Culpeper,Virginia Mother: Asenith Browning b. About 1760 in Culpepper Co. Virginia Marriage: 5 SEP 1797 in Bourbon Co.,Kentucky ---------------------------------------- OTHER SHACKELFORD IN HENRY CO.,KY. John J. Shackelford married Polly Neville, daughter of Robert Neville,November 10, 1825, in Henry County, Ky. He was a brother of James andAmbrose Grayson Shackelford, perhaps. Or was he? (comment of Clan Mag.) SHACKELFORD CLAN MAGAZINE 1 (509) Sept 1950 Then there were other Shackelfords in Henry Co., one James Shackelford, said to have been born about 1798, either in Virginia or Kentucky; and heis said to have been a son of another James Shackelford, whose wife was aMiss Strother. But Mrs Mattie Hayden, of Wyaconda, Mo (see below 1860census for Mattie)**, daughter of James and Permelia CarolineSibley-Shackelford, says that her grandmother, mother of James, was aMiss Duncan. So this indicates that James was not a son of James, butperhaps a son of ' William Shackelford and Frances Duncan.' ** **Note by PSH: Confusion over a Strother being James's mother can probbe explained this way. Ann Duncan (1770) Va. marr'd George Strother.Ann was the dau of James Duncan & Asenith Browning. Asenith's dau(Frances Duncan) marr'd William Shackelford. Is this Wm & Frances(Duncan) Shackelford of Va., the parents of both James 1799 & JohnShackelford 1802 Va.? I can't find the children of Wm. and FrancesDuncan Shackelford mentioned anywhere. One record thought that Franceswas a Francis, therefore was searching for a male Shackelford with noluck. History *Bourbon County, Kentucky actually began as Bourbon County, Virginia in1785, when it was created from Fayette County, Kentucky (previously alsoin Virginia). It comprised a much larger area than the present-dayBourbon County; the rest of its former territory is now divided betweenthe following present-day Kentucky counties: Bracken, Boone, Campbell,Clark, Estill, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Harrison, Kenton, Mason,Montgomery, Lewis, Nicholas, Pendleton, Powell, and Robertson. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourbon_County,_Kentucky Note: This could be the confusion of whether James Shackelford was bornin Va. or Ky.1 | |
