Note-ShackelfordWilliam Shackelford LEGENDARY HISTORY OF THE SHACKELFORD FAMILY

The legendary history of this family commenced with Baron Jaques Le Forte(a nobleman of Normandy ). He was an officer in the army of William, Dukeof Normandy, during his invasion of England in the Year 1066.

Ancestors of the Shackelfords (le) came from France in 1066 with Williamthe Conqueror who overran England in that year. They were given land inGodlaming Parish, Surrey Co, Eng. They called themselves Wm. DeShackelford, Henry De (of) Shackelford etc. They eventually dropped the'De'. They settled in the Village of Shackelford, which still existstoday.

William I, 'the Conqueror', granted him lands for his service and hesettled in England. His children intermarried with the Brittons andSaxons. The name changed frequently until Henry IV, when Henry DeShackelford , then a gentleman in waiting to Henry V (Merry Hal). About1500, William De Shackelford, another descendant, was officer of thehousehold of Henry VII. The ancestral seat of the family was Golddaming,Surry County, with the Village of Shackelford. This passed from thefamily in 1620: the residence was burned circa 1700. The land and thevillage being now part of the estate of the Earl of Middleton. William, agrandson of the above, supported the cause of the Huguenots, and in 1550fled to France and joined the army of Henry of Navarre. He married a MissSt. Pierre and from continued persecution left France and settled in theNetherlands where both he and his wife died. His son joined the army ofCharles I and followed his fortunes until his arrest. Roger Shackelfordis the immigrant, arriving in America in 1666.

Another History of the Shackelford Family

The American branch of the Shackelfords is generally believed to have
descended from Baron Jacques-le-Forte, who was a nobleman in Normandy and
an officer in the army of William the Conqueror, when he overran England
in 1066. William the Conqueror granted him land, and this land became
the ancestral seat of the family in Godalming Parish, Surry County,
England (about 39 miles northwest of London) [actually SW]. The town was
called Shackelford Village, but in 1620 it passed from the Shackelfords
to the Earl of Middleton. (The name appears in old records with the
spelling 'Shackleford' as well as 'Shackelford.')

James Hutchinson, John Easton and William Robertson, witnesses. Will BookD, page 347, Carteret County, North Carolina.
----------------------
John Shackelford mentions Mary, Elizabeth, Daniel, and Sarah Morse, allchildren of Joseph and Blandina Morse. Then he mentions Joseph Morse ashis nephew, and this Joseph is a son of Joseph and Sarah Morse. Thereforeas we understand it, Joseph Morse, the elder, married Sarah Shackelford, the sister of John, and his nephew , and his nephew Joseph, was theirson. Then all the children mentioned in the Will were son and daughtersof Joseph the nephew, and his wife Blandina. Some records show that thisis Joseph Moss -- not Morse; but in the original instrument it is veryclearly written as 'Morse.'
