Note-Shackelford | Roger Shackelford II This Roger had at one time lived in Hanover County Roger, Sr., sold land in Halifax County, to William Edwards, December1777. See Deed Book 10, page 430. And we note that John Shackelford,Robinson Shackelford and Betty Glass were all witnesses to the abovesale. That was in December 1777, and we find Roger making and dating a Will inKing and Queen County, December 24, 1779. So it is very likely that theland sale in 1777 was when he was selling out to -8(1028)- return to Kingand Queen County. The sons William, John, Roger, Richard and Robinson, were all soldiers ofthe Revolution. William was a Lieutennant in the 14th Regiment ofVirginia Militia, was wounded at the battle of Germantown, and diedNovember 23, 1777. Source: Shackelford Clan Magazine http://members.tripod.com/~wvgal/clan11-9.htm PSH ----------------------------------- SHAKER INFORMATION The Shakers, as perhaps all of you know, were a very peculiar religioussect that thrived for a time in the early part of the 19th century, andhad a colony at South Union, just over the line in Logan County, Ky. andperhaps all of you know, forbade cohabitation of the sexes, so among theShakers there were no family relationships. No marriages were consumated, and when a married man and his wife became members the man occupiedquarters in one section of the colony and the woman in another. Thechildren, if any, were given over to the care of a 'Mother Superior'. wholooked after all the children in the colony. One man in the colony kept a journal of every day events. The colony atSouth Union was organized in 1806 and disbanded in 1917. And the oldrecords--The Journals, have been preserved, have been gathered up andpublished.
