Note Census Records (Richard was born 1768 in South Carolina):

     1810 - Newberry County, SC
     1820 - Newberry County, SC
     1830 - Henry County, GA
     1840 - Carroll County, GA
1850 - Coosa County, AL (Hatchet Creek)

     (Richard died in 1855)

Note: The Richard Knight in the 1840 Carroll Co., GA, census may not be this Richard Knight - see notes below.

In 1850 Richard Knight, (age 84, born South Carolina), together with his daughter, Sarah Knight, (age 50, born Georgia), is living in the household of Benjamin Allen, (age 29, born Alabama), in the Hatchett Creek District, of Coosa County, Alabama. This is Joshua Benjamin Allen who married Mary Ann Lassiter, Jan. 24, 1847, in Coosa Co., AL. Mary Ann Lassiter is probably Richard's granddaughter, a daughter of Richard's daughter, Mary, who married Solomon Lassiter in Henry Co., GA, in 1825. Mary Ann is age 23 on the 1850 census in Coosa Co.

The listings for the Ebenezer Methodist Cemetery, located about 3 1/2 miles south of Kelley's Crossroads in Coosa County, (seeCoosa County Cemetery Book, Vol. II) contain a notation by Mrs. Mary Watters Jackson, who contributed the information for this cemetery, that a "Granney" Knight buried there, with no dates shown, "could be Martha, wife of Richard". This notation further states that "From Vessel Bible, Martha Knight died January 1, 1834". Martha Knight Vessels was a daughter of Richard Knight.

It is possible that Mrs. Jackson's note regarding "Granney" being a Martha, wife of Richard, is incorrect. The Bible record specifies that Martha died in 1834 at which time Richard was presumably living either in Henry County or Carroll County, Georgia. In this case, Martha would not have been buried in Coosa County, AL. As indicated elsewhere, the Martha of the Bible record is probably the Martha Knight who married James Vessels in 1833 in Henry Co., GA, and is buried with her husband at the Fayetteville Cemetery in Talladega County, AL. In view of this, "Granney" may, indeed, be a second wife of Richard.

Since no record can be found of a marriage for Richard Knight in Coosa, Talladega or Tallapoosa Counties, Alabama, or in Henry County, Georgia where Richard was enumerated in the 1830 census and where his son, Enoch and daughters Mary and Martha married in 1827, until further information appears, I lean toward the Sarah Knight.2

Elizabeth Knight

Family 2

Mary Knight b. bt 1833 - 1834
Note Was Elizabeth Knight who married James Patterson, February 20, 1843, a daughter of Richard and Martha Knight and one of the three females age 20-30 who appear on the 1840 Carroll Co., GA, census in the household of Richard?

Or, was she the daughter of Richard's son Enoch and his wife Faithy - a daughter born ca 1828.

Enoch and Faithy were married in March 1827 and are known to have a son, James A., born May 1829. Nevertheless, there is room for a child to have been born in 1828. If Elizabeth was indeed a daughter of Enoch and Faithy, born ca 1828, she would have been of marriageable age in 1843.

However, neither the 1830 or 1840 census records for Enoch Knight contain a female who would meet this criteria. In fact the only female in Enoch's ousehold on the 1830 census is the wife, Faithy. The 3 young females in Enoch's household in the 1840 census are all under 10, and all 3 can be accounted for on the 1850 census (Martha, age 19; Sarah, age 18; and Mary, age 16). For this reason, I have dismissed the possibility that Elizabeth was Enoch's daughter.

In this case, if Elizabeth was a daughter of Richard and Martha, she would have been Enoch's sister and an aunt of Enoch's daughter Mary. This would mean that James Patterson would have married his own niece, by marriage, after the death of his wife.1
