Note | | Census Records (James was born 1829 in Talbot Co., GA):
1830 - At home with parents, Talbot Co., GA. 1840 - At home with parents, Talladega Co., AL 1850 - At home with widowed mother, Coosa Co., AL (Hatchet Creek ) 1860 - Coosa County, AL (Rockford) 1870 - Coosa County, AL (Traveler's Rest) 1880 - Coosa County, AL (Traveler's Rest) 1900 - (widow ?)
(James died in 1898; Martha in 1910)
Note: Eliza Knight, age 18, appears in the 1870 census in the household of James and Martha Knight. However, she is listed after the youngest child (Walter, age 10). She does not appear in the 1860 census for this family. However, that census contains numerous errors which make it appear that the census information may have been furnished by someone other than an immediate family member.
Since James and Martha were not married January, 1853, and oldest son Mark Enoch was born in November, 1853, it does not appear possible for James and Martha to have had a daughter who would be 18 in 1870. In any event, if Eliza is not a child of this family, it is not known whose child she may be. An Ella Knight married William Cox, December 31, 1872, in Coosa County, AL.
Although James Allen Knight was opposed to the movement to take Alabama out of the Union, after the War began , he served for a time with the Confederate Army as a gunsmith.1 |
