Note-McMahan | Thomas Babb Sr Thomas Babb and Wives: Bathsheba Hussey and Elizabeth (Conway) Booth Thomas Babb , son of Phillip and Mary, was born ca. 1664 on the Isles ofShoals, what was then part of Massachusetts. Thomas was about 7 years oldwhen his father died. In April 1675 he was indentured until the age of 18to Henry Green of Hampton, NH. It was there he probably met the Perkinsand Hussey families, but the date of his marriage is unknown. His first wife was Bathsheba Hussey, daughter of John and Rebecca(Perkins) Hussey of Hampton, NH. Bathsheba was born Sept. 21, 1671 anddied by Oct 1713 at New Castle Co., DE. She was the mother of Thomas'children. Her father and uncle Stephen became Quakers and found itdesirable to leave the NH area because of persecution of Quakers there.John and his wife relocated to New Castle Co., DE. Apparently Thomas followed the migratory path of his father-in-law. OnDec. 17, 1695 he was conveyed 100 acres of land and 20 acres of 'mash' inRocklands by Timothy Atkinson. (Records of the Court of New Castle, DE,Vol. II, 1681-1699) Thomas has sizeable land holding. In 1735 he obtained a Patent to 600acres of land in Frederick Co., VA. He sent two of his sons, Thomas, Jr.,and Philip to occupy the acreage and to carry out the provision of thePatent. The other sons are believed to have relocated to Chester Co., PA On Aug. 13, 1751 his will (dated Aug 17, 1748) was proved in New CastleCo., DE. He bequeathed the home place in DE to his oldest son Peter andleft the VA lands to Thomas, Jr. and Philip. He made other bequests tohis daughters Mary, Rebecca and Lydia, as well as to three children ofhis deceased daughter Hulda--John, Rebecca and Lydia Gregory On March 25, 1720, Thomas married a second time to Elizabeth (Conway)Booth. She was born July 9, 1687 to Thomas and Mary (Hollingworth)Conway. She was a widow of Charles Booth. Thomas and Bathsheba had seven known children: Thomas Babb, Jr. b: Abt 1697 Peter Babb b: 1695 m. Mary Lewis Philip Babb b: Abt 1699 Mary Babb b: Abt 1701 m. James Swaffer Rebecca Babb b: Abt 1703 Lydia Babb b: Abt 1705 mar. John Morgan Oct 17, 1735 Hulda Babb b: Abt 1707 m. Simon Gregory Thomas SR BABB(1) was born in 1664 in Isles of Shoals. Colony of MA. Hedied on 13 AUG 1751 in New Castle County, Colony of Delaware. Thomaswould have been about 7 when his father died. In April 1626 he wasindentured until the age of 18 to Henry Green of Hampton, NH 'as a childwho was living with him.' Thomas would have the Hussey and Perkinsfamilies in Hampton but no date and place of his marriage is known.Thomas and brother William were taxed in Salem, MA in 1683. Also WilliamBabb and Company had an account with Philip English, a merchant of Salemtogoods sold them to carry to the sourthward. Bathsheba's father and uncle Stephen Hussey, became Quakers and found itdesirable to leave the NH area because of the persecution of Quakersthere. Stephen moved to Nantucket Island, and John and his wife continueddown the coast to New Castle County, Delaware, which was noted for beingtolerant. On 1 July 1695 John was conveyed land of 300 acres from John Richardson.(Records of the Court of New Castle, De. Vol2 1681-1699). Thomas Babb apparently followed close behind Hussey, because on 17December 1695 he was conveyed 100 acres of land and 20 acres of 'mash' inRocklands by Timothy Atkinson. Thomas and Bathsheba had 7 known children, but we can only approximatetheir birthdates. Thomas prospered in Delaware and had sizable land holdings . In 2735 heobtained a Patent to 600 acres of land in Frederick County, VA. By thistime this 3 sons had moved to Chester County, PA, just across the stateline from the former home in Delaware. Thomas sent the younger sonsThomas Jr and Philip to occupy the 699 acres and to carry out the otherprovisions of the Patent. His will dated 17 August 1748 and proved 13 August 1751, he beqeathed thehome place in Delaware to his oldest son Peter. and left the VA land tosons Thomas Jr and Philip. He made other bequests to his daughters Mary,Rebecca, as well as to three children of his deceased daughterHulda-John, Rebecca, and Lydia Gregory. In the Newark Monthly Meeting Records there is an entry dated 3 October1713 which reads as follows : Thomas Babb appearing at this meeting andgives ye meeting to understand yt ye death of his wife and for want ofsome persons to whom he might leave ye care of his young children hathhitherto been ye lett of his not coming more frequently to ye meetings ofbusiness. ' While there are early entries concerning Bathseba, none ofthem mention the birth of her children or the date of her marriage. SinceThomas didn't marry 2nd until 1720 he ran a single parent household withresulting problems. A couple of his children were written up in Quakerrecords for not following the rules.! Parents: Phillip BABB and MaryBAYLIS.1 |

In1692 he married Lydia Bragdon, the daughter of Arthur and Lydia (Twisden)Bragdon of York. She was also the granddaughter of Arthur Samuel, who wasa soldier from Amesbury, MA. On Dec. 29, 1691, Sessions of the Peace at York presented Philip andLydia for fornication. They were to receive seven stripes each on thebare skin or pay 40 shillings. He had a governor's license to marry and wasmarried in Holy Trinity Church (Old Swedes Church) at Wilmington,Delaware 6/26/1729. (I have visited this lovely old church.) His wifeSarah, born 1708 in Chester, Pa; died 1764 was the daughter of WilliamFoulk and Elizabeth Cope of Bethel Township. Tax records indicate thatThomas owned property in Bethel Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania in1730. Not long after his marriage there was a movement of Quakers fromPennsylvania to Frederick County, Virginia. Thomas went with theseQuakers and was one of the founding fathers of the Hopewell MonthlyMeeting north of Winchester in Frederick County. This was in 1734. His father had a land grant of 600 acres on Apple Pie Ridge, near Babb'sRun, northwest of Winchester. Thomas settled there and was joined by hisbrother, Phillip. At his father's death they inherited this land. Thomas died 11/04/1760. His will was proved 11/04/1760. He left the homeplace to his son, Sampson, and other bequest to his other children. Hiswife, not being mentioned, is believed to have already died. The children of Thomas BABB, Jr. and Sarah Foulk were: GENERATION IV 1 - Joseph 2 - Thomas 3 - Stephen 4 - Elizabeth 5 - Sampson 6 - Philip 7 - Peter The first lovely old home belonging to Thomas was called 'The Great MarshPlantation', now known as The Babb-Purcell-Janney House. It dates to1735. Great Marsh is located on the north side of route 673 between route522 and the Apple Pie Ridge Road in Frederick, Virginia. The second home named 'The Brick House' is a lovely old brick mansion anddates also to 1735. It is located west of the Apple Pie Ridge Road andsouth of route 672 on Babb's Run. This is also in Frederick, Virginia. My line continues with Joseph BABB who married Mary McCool. Mary providedstores and lodging to our soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Thosewho are interested, may join DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution)on Mary's service. She was the daughter of James McCool b. in Ireland, and emigrated in1725. He married Ann Wright. Mary 'Polly' McCool was married first toEldridge Fuller and married secondly to Joseph Babb. Joseph was disowned by the Quakers for marrying out of unity. He movedhis family to the Piedmont section of South Carolina settling in what isnow the lower part of Laurens County. On 11/24/1767, Joseph received agrant to 250 acres of land on Beaver Dam Creek, and on 7/3/1868, Mary wasgiven a certificate of membership in the Bush River Monthly Meeting(Quaker) which was situated about four miles from what is now theLaurens-Newberry County Line. Joseph died in 1843. It is not known where his grave is located. Mary'swill is on record in the Lauren's County Court House. She is buried inthe Babb-Kellett Cemetery in lower Laurens County. Mary was disowned bythe Quakers on 4/28/1792. No reason was given, but it is presumed it wasfor remaining in South Carolina when the Quakers left the state. It couldalso have been due to her participation in the American Revolution. The children of Joseph BABB and Mary were: GENERATION V 1 - Abner abt. 1763-9/18/1847 m.
