George Yunt and his father may have been with this group comingdown the Ohio since George was discharged from Fort Pitt in October 1799and the flotilla left from Fort Pitt in the fall of 1799. Scene of massacre, undoubtedly the bloodiestin early Kentucky, which took place, 1781. A Miami Indian party killedover 60 pioneers en route from Squire Boone's Painted Stone Station tosafety of forts at Falls of Ohio. Next day, reinforced by British Capt.McKee's Hurons, they killed 16 of 25 militia led by Col. John Floyd tobury massacre victims. Source: Kentucky Historical Marker Database George Yount and his wife, Polly, were also involved in the Long RunMassacre at which time he was taken prisoner by the Indians. Polly wasabout 6 months pregnant with their first child, John b. 1781 born atLinn's Sta. in Louisville. George is listed in Captain Squire Boone's militia company June 23, 1780, and he was with Squire Boone in George Rogers Clark's 1780 campaignagainst the Shawnee, which was based near Louisville. After defeatingthe Indians in a pitched battle, they laid waste their villages anddestroyed their corn fields, 'with inexorable severity,' in retaliationof a previously failed expedition. In any event, George must have felta good bit of connection to Squire since an affidavid by John Demareedated February 2, 1837 states that George Yount served in July 1780 as asoldier with Capt. Squire Boone in the Army of General Clark against the'Shawena' and 'Pickawa' towns on the Miami River.' George Yunt's name appears in the 'Abstract to George Rogers ClarkPapers, Microfilm Roll #6,' Virginia State Library and Archives for June26, 1781 where he is listed as one of the workers receiving payment fromthe State of Virginia for building a smokehouse. The other workersmentioned mirror some of the names of the first Painted Stone settlers. George and his wife, Polly, were part of the group of settlers movingfrom Painted Stone Station (or Squire Boone's Station) in Shelby Countyto Lynn's Station, near Louisville in September 1781. The move wasprompted by an increase in Indian 'sign.' As the settlers were crossingLong Run Creek, the Indians attacked. The following is a partialaccount of George's actions that day: Squire Boone's son, Isaiah, two of whose daughters later married intofamilies prominent in pioneer Pike county history, was a participant inthis running battle with the savages, although he was then only a lad of9. Riding a pack horse, he dismounted and retreated with the others. Atthe crossing of Long Run, he was threatened by an Indian, but the pluckyboy held the savage warrior at bay with his gun, which, however, had gotwet in crossing and would not go off. A man by the name of George Yuntcame to Isaiah's aid, shot the Indian, and ordered Isaiah to throw awayhis gun and clear himself. Source: History of Kentucky, Vol I., by Lewis Collins.
