Cause of Death: Plague

The story of Abijah Hughes is an interesting one. When I begun I had so
little to go on. The family story said that his family came from the
Island of Wales. that he is the first generation in this continent. Thatmay mean that he was the first generation born in this country or thefirst generation to immigrate here.
In the 1850 Census Abijah is said to be blind. Those listed in his home
are Abijah 76, Susannah 72. Elizabeth 39, John 15.
Known children are William I who marries Mahala Rodgers in Shelby County
and they move to Davies County, Mo., in August of 1855.
Samuel Montague who marries Lucy Ballard in Owen County. They are buried
in the Cemetery in Frankfort. John W. who married Mary Rodgers in
Franklin Couty. They go to Cooper County, Mo, and die there. Elizabeth
never marries and after 1860, goes to Indiana to be with two nephews.
Children of John and Mary. Mary Ann marries Bartlett Lancaster in
Franklin County. Until at least 1850 they live and pretty well raise
their family in Kentucky. Later moving to Iowa where Bartlett dies in
1857.
Louisa marries a Redding or Reading and is living on the family farm in
1870 census. Martha marries Wallace.
He and Susannah are found on the 1860 census , Franklin County, Ky, but
he disappears from the tax list by 1861.
Oral family history is that Elijah's father is Thomas and that Abijah
was the first generation born in the United States.
Interestingly enough the Mahala Rodgers parents are also attending the
same Church. Many of the members of the Chuch came to Ky togather, as a
Traveling Church. More about the Rodgers and Hughes family may be found
in the book titled ' Forks or Elkhorn Church'. The book was quite
interesting in telling about the history of the area at that time.
Elijah did not own any slaves on the 1830 census
